  • About the work

Feng’s practice explores painting as a medium for representing memory, events, and history. Derived from autobiographical narratives and other narratives about entrapment, marginalisation and displacement, her work attempts to communicate unspeakable personal and social psychological experiences through fictional constructions of absurd scenarios and depictions of forces revealed by the body.

Feng engages experiences of the other through embodied seeing in painting. She takes possession of ongoing life and social events by turning them into her own imaginary, subjective experiences. The intensifications of the represented event and its affects are retained in the shared bodily, sensational and imaginary space manifested by the medium of painting.  When most events are circulated through the mediation of images and narratives, Feng explores how the painting process can enable an undoing of preconceived ideas of an event, furthermore to open gaps for emotional and meaningful engagements. Through her painting practice, Feng seeks new representations of existence in times of great political and cultural changes, reflecting on the conflicts within the self, and between the self and the world.
