If for centuries our idea of femininity has been shaped by the female nude, with the female body as a malleable mass for ideals of beauty and artistic design, always viewed through the male gaze, what characterizes our image of masculinity? Embedded in pop culture, visual stereotypes such as the femme fatale still shape our gender conceptions. But what dispositives are the underrepresented male nude based on?
Using risography, Tobia König allows herself to break those hierarchies of representation and gaze. She shows stylized images of naked men asleep, masturbating, or in a self-fellating position. What happens when the naked man breaks free from a niche context and becomes an exploration field for images of masculinity? What statements about power relations that manifest themselves in gender roles can such an extension of the nudity discourse make possible?
